Scalp Oiling Guide for Softer, Smoother-Feeling Hair
A Simple Way to Use Hair + Scalp Support Oil
There is a particular moment after washing your hair when the ends feel a little rougher than you would like.
You run your fingers through them, notice the dryness, and reach for something light rather than a whole bottle of product.
I usually use a few drops of Hair + Scalp Support Oil on freshly washed, towel-dried hair, smoothing it through the ends before it dries. Afterwards, my hair feels easier to run my fingers through, with a soft finish rather than a heavy, coated one.
The oil is a lightweight, fragrance-free blend for hair and scalp.
It combines sunflower oil infused with Kawakawa, Mānuka and Calendula with baobab, safflower and moringa oils, plus vitamin E.
What Hair Oiling Can Do
Oil can give hair more slip, so it may feel smoother, softer and easier to comb. How it feels depends on your hair, how much you use and where you apply it.
Think of oiling as a grooming step, not a promise of hair growth or a treatment for scalp concerns.
Choose Where to Apply It
I start at the ends because that is where my hair tends to feel driest. Adding oil there gives the lengths a little softness without making the roots feel weighed down.
If you want to try it on your scalp, apply a small amount between a few hair parts. Fine hair may feel weighed down by too much oil, while longer or thicker hair may take a little more through the lengths.
- Fine hair: Start with very little, especially near the roots.
- Longer or thicker hair: You may prefer a little more through the lengths and ends.
- Unsure where to begin? Try the ends first, then adjust next time based on how your hair feels.
How to Apply It Through the Hair
- Start with clean, slightly damp or dry hair.
- Warm a few drops between your palms until the oil feels smooth and light.
- Smooth the oil through the mid-lengths and ends, starting at the ends.
- Comb, brush or style as usual. Add more only if needed.
The goal is hair that feels lightly smoothed and soft, never slick or coated. If it feels greasy, you have probably used a little more than your hair needed.
How to Apply It to the Scalp
- Place one or two drops between your fingertips.
- Part your hair where needed and lightly apply the oil to the scalp.
- Massage gently with your fingertips using light, circular movements.
- Leave it in or wash it out, depending on your preference.
Keep the touch gentle. The aim is to spread a little oil, not to scrub or scratch the scalp.
Find the Amount That Suits You
Using too much oil the first time is common, and it is easy to fix. If your hair feels coated or greasy, simply use less next time or keep the oil to the ends.
If you are using the oil on your scalp, start sparingly and notice how your scalp feels afterwards. Scalp oiling does not suit everyone, so there is no need to include it if it is not comfortable for you.
When to Skip Scalp Oiling
If oiling leaves your scalp uncomfortable, stop using it there and wash it out. You can try using a small amount on the hair lengths instead.
If you have persistent itching, flaking or irritation, ask a health professional for advice rather than relying on a cosmetic oil. Some scalp conditions may be aggravated by oiling.
