Why We Are Changing Everything
The Story Behind Our New Barrier Balm
Less clutter, more focus. Why we turned four beloved formulas into one balm.
If you’ve been following Eckco® for a while, you’ll know this business has never been run from behind glass. It lives in the workshop, among the scent of Kawakawa steeping in oil, the quiet rhythm of tins being filled, and the care of every label applied by hand.
Small-batch making is a constant process of refinement. We begin with an idea, make it, observe how it lives in the world, and listen closely to the people using it.
Over the past year, as we poured tins of our Botanical Balm, Mānuka Balm, Flaxseed Balm, and Wonder Balm, a pattern became clear. Offering four separate balms asked customers to navigate choices that were often more complicated than they needed to be.
Customers would ask us:
“My hands are dry, but I also have eczema, should I choose the Mānuka or the Botanical?”
Or:
“I want Calendula and Kawakawa in the same balm. Which one should I pick?”
We realised the range needed to feel simpler. So the Eckco team returned to the formulation table with one intention: to bring our key ingredients together into a single, considered balm.
The result is our new Triple-Infused Kawakawa Barrier Balm.
Small Batch, One Focus
In the world of large-scale skincare, consistency is often built through volume. In the Eckco workshop, it comes from patience.
This move to one Barrier Balm allows us to focus our attention fully on a single formula. Instead of dividing time across several infusions, we can refine one blend with greater care.
We are not simply combining ingredients. We are slow-infusing them. Kawakawa leaves, Mānuka leaves, and Calendula petals are steeped gradually in oil, allowing the botanical character of each plant to unfold within the formula.
By consolidating the range, we can give every batch of Kawakawa Barrier Balm the same careful attention from start to finish.
The Triple Infusion: What’s Inside?
When you open a tin of the new Barrier Balm, you’ll notice it looks and smells familiar, but the formula brings together three of our core botanical ingredients in one pot.
Here is why we chose these three, and why they belong together.
1. Kawakawa — Double Infused
Kawakawa sits at the heart of our range. We use a slow infusion method to bring it into the balm base and create a waterless botanical formula.
2. Mānuka Leaf — Double Infused
We also infuse Mānuka leaf into the formula. It adds another native botanical note and reflects the way we like to build our products from plant ingredients.
3. Calendula
Calendula completes the triple infusion with a softer botanical presence and helps round out the blend.
Why Barrier Balm?
We chose the name Kawakawa Barrier Balm because it says clearly what the product is: a waterless balm rather than a lotion or cream.
It is formulated without water and has a richer, more occlusive feel on the skin than a water-based product. It fits easily into a simple daily routine.
A Note From the Workshop: How to Use It
Because this is a concentrate, a little goes a long way.
The best time to apply it is after washing your hands or showering, when skin is still slightly damp. Warm a small amount between your fingers, then press it gently into the skin.
Here is our top tip for getting the most out of your tin:
- Water is your friend: Apply the balm after washing or showering, while skin is still a little damp.
- Melt it first: Use a small amount and rub it between your fingers before applying.
- Press, don’t rub: Gently press the warm balm into the skin.
Used this way, the balm spreads more easily and one small tin goes a long way.
To Our Loyal Customers
We know it can feel unsettling when a favourite product changes.
If you loved the Mānuka Balm, you’ll still recognise the botanical direction in the new Barrier Balm. If you loved the Wonder Balm, you may find this new formula even more versatile.
This isn’t about cutting corners. It’s about refining the range into one focused balm that reflects where Eckco is now.
We’re excited for you to try this new Triple Infusion. It is the same Eckco you trust: simple, native, and honest.
